Irish Shamrock Sign

Share

This one was a request from the hubby, an Irish Shamrock Sign inspired by the colors of the Irish Flag with our last name, ‘Ovens’ on the banner.

This sign is simple, inexpensive, and all hand painted. If you enjoy painting on wood you will enjoy making this sign. The Shamrock wood decor came from the Dollar Tree.

Let’s Create!

Supplies Needed to Make the Irish Shamrock Sign

Wooden sign from the Dollar Tree

Paint brushes

Paint in white, orange, light green, and dark green

Black paint markers – 1 thin, 1 thicker

Stencils, printables, or transfers – I made a printable in Canva

Twine – you can also reuse the one that comes with the sign

Scissors

Protective covering for your work surface

Making the Irish Shamrock Sign

Paint, paint, paint

First, remove the twine from the decor piece and lay out some protective covering for your work surface.

Now paint! I started by painting the clovers in alternating greens and then painted the banner orange. My recommendation would be to paint the sides first, then the top. A couple of coats was needed as I wanted the underneath colors to start out really bold.

Once that is all dry. Cover it all with white. I ended up doing two coats of white as well.

Once that dries you will sand to give it the distressed look. I got over zealous and sanded off to much. I just added a little more white with the chippy brush in those areas.

Lettering Application

Once it dries, you can apply your lettering. If you have a Cricut, Stencil or Transfer you would like to use go ahead. I didn’t so I found fonts I liked in Canva and printed it on the inkjet in the size I wanted.

Steps to get the printable design on wood

Print the words in the desired size.

Take a pencil and using the side of it’s tip shade over the backside of your printed script.

Once you have finished applying the pencil, tape it down (pencil side towards the wood) and trace over it with a ballpoint pen.

Remove the paper to reveal your paintable script.

For more detailed (with pics) instructions on the letter transfer process see my Love Notes Holder Tutorial.

Painting the Lettering

I used a really thin paint marker to go over the outline and then a thicker marker to fill it all in. It got two good coats.

I finally got some new paint markers and am very pleased so far with these Paint Markers for intricate work.

Then I lightly sanded the letters to match the distressed look of the rest of the sign.

Finally, I grabbed twine to hang it with. I just poked the string through the holes and knotted it.

Done.
