DIY Pumpkin Harvest Decor with Dollar Tree items

Share

I have seen so many different things done with these items from the Dollar Tree.  I love that about inexpensive decor you can take it home and make it your own. This DIY Pumpkin Harvest Decor cost just $4 plus paint, foliage, and tools.

I don’t have much for Fall decorations anymore after moving and then moving again. In fact, aside from the Toilet Paper Pumpkin, this is the first decor piece created this year.

You can view a short YouTube video tutorial here on my Lovensthelife Channel.)

Ok…..Let’s Create!

Supplies List

  • 3 wooden pumpkins from the Dollar Tree
  • Harvest metal word – (comes in a pack of 3 different words from Dollar Tree)
  • Paint in white and brown (I used Rust-oleum Chalked in Linen White and Apple Barrel Acrylic in Chocolate Sprinkle)
  • Glue (I used my glue gun, wood glue, and Loctite gel glue)
  • Paintbrush
  • Foliage (The leaves and moss both came from the Dollar Tree)
  • Sand paper or sanding block

Instructions

The Wooden Pumpkin Transformation

First decide which side you want to work with. I thought doing the sticker side would be simpler. Now I am not so sure as they stick really really well. I tried several ways to remove it. Best I have found so far on either side is a short 3 step process. First, lay a wet paper towel on it to moisten it. Next, scrape. Finally, sand. The paper towel and scraping just helps in not gunking up the sandpaper but you could probably just go right to sanding.

After sanding I added two coats of the white paint. One really probably would have been sufficient as I ended up distressing more than planned.

Once the paint has dried, sand to your desired preference. I decided I wanted the bright colors to be the main focus so I sanded nearly all of the white back off.  You could also dry brush the white on but I really like the look of both colors being the same age. Plus that smooth sanded wood feel is so nice like freshly shaved legs or a babies skin.

Next I glued the 3 pieces together. I used wood glue and clamped them while they dried. *Note I glued the pieces together before I finished sanding. I thought I might like a more white look but ended up wanting more color.

In my case once they were glued together I finished sanding to reveal more of the original colors. In your case you will probably have them distressed to your liking before gluing.

The Metal ‘Harvest’ Word Mini Makeover

First, lightly sand the word to scuff up the surface.

Next, I used the brown paint and painted the word.  I like the look of the metal but really wanted a dark rich brown to go with these bright colors.

Once the paint dryed it was glued to the pumpkins with Loctite gel glue. I chose this glue because the tip is precise.

Finishing Touches

Finally add any trimmings you would like. I added a couple of leaves and some moss from the Dollar Tree.  These items were simply hot glued into place.

Done.

It really brightens up the mantle.

Now to get the little bit of Fall decor out I still have and finish decorating. Also get busy on some other projects I have planned.
