This DIY Black and Gold Reversible Snowflake Tray Garland was so fun and inexpensive to make.
I recently completed my very first YouTube collaboration and did several projects for a black and gold holiday tiered tray. This was the final project that wasn’t completely done prior to that being published.
I tend to generally do very traditional decor for Christmas so wanted to do something completely different this year and this is what I came up with. I had recently finished the tiered tray (tutorial here and YouTube video tutorial here ) and wanted to decorate it.
If you are also interested in the projects for the black and gold holiday tiered tray you can see that blog post here or if you prefer video you can view that on my new YouTube Channel here.
Finally, the video tutorial for this project is here on my YouTube Channel.
Ok, let’s finish that tray with this last project.
Ok…..Let’s Create!
Supplies List
- 4 Snowflake Wooden Ornaments (Dollar Tree)
- Black Paint
- Gold Paint
- Twine
- Wooden Beads
- Wood glue
- Scissors
- Paint brush
I also used a disposable cup, foam block, toothpick, skewers, tape, and a small piece of contact paper. You may or may not also need those items.
Instructions
The Snowflakes
I first painted one snowflake black and one gold. I learned this little tip from Karen at The Loft Home Decor (you can find her on Instagram) of using contact paper to hold smaller items while you paint them. My hands were so clean until I did the next two snowflakes.
This didn’t go as planned. I was intending to do a quick paint pour on these two snowflakes. I didn’t think it all the way through. Doing a paint pour on these would require so much paint as it just falls off the edges. I didn’t have a full bottle of paint to run off all the edges so I improvised. I dabbed it out of the cup by tapping the edge of the cup onto the snowflake until it leveled out and covered the whole thing. I then added just a little bit of gold back onto them as I had overdone the black. I took a toothpick and swirled the newly added gold around. It was actually really fun but I like messy paint jobs. I had paint leftover in the cup so a painted a couple beads the same way.
The Beads
I painted 10 beads black and 10 gold. I didn’t use all of them but always like to have extra on hand. There are many ways to paint beads but for me this is what works the best. I paint the bottom and then place it on the skewer. I then paint the middle and top once it is on the skewer. Repeat until all the beads are painted. When I do a second coat I leave them on the skewer and just paint them downwards in a line. Occasionally you will have a couple stick together but I have always been able to gently pull them apart without damaging the paint.
The Tassel
Take your twine and wrap it around your hand until you have the thickness you want. Then you will cut it from the roll.
Cut a piece long enough to wrap and knot around one end. This will be the top of the tassel. Cut the loops at the other end and that will be your fringe. I then trim it up so it is nice and even.
Next, I took twine double the lenghth I wanted the garland and folded it in half. I looped it through the top of the tassel and pulled it tight. I then added a knot just to make sure it was secure.
Putting it all together
I took two of the snowflakes and glued them back sides together. I did a swirl and black combo and a gold and swirl combo. I used a paintbrush to apply the wood glue. The bits that leaked out the sides I took off with a clean paint brush.
Next, I added the beads. You can use a needle for this step but these beads have large holes so I didn’t.
When i was finished adding the beads, I added the snowflake and tied a knot as close to the end of the beads as I could get. I added a little tape to the end of the thread to weed it back through a couple of the beads as it wasn’t easily going through. I then cut off the excess.
You have made beaded garland.
Done.
Do you like the solid colored sides or the swirled?
