Mini May Day Door Vase ~ from Upcycled Glass Bottles ~

Share

I think giving May Day Baskets is a nearly lost tradition. I wish to bring it back. Last year we created the Mini May Day Door Vase instead of a basket to gift our neighbors on May 1st. I loved gifting little May Day Baskets as a kid and wish to share that tradition with my own children. This was a fun little DIY my daughter and I did to hold a daffodil from our yard.

This year our daffodils have barely broke ground. You can see how we created these this year via video over on my YouTube Channel.

Ok…..Let’s Create

Supplies Needed to Make A Mini May Day Door Vase

  • Bottles or small vases of choice
  • Flower printable – Downloadable template available
  • May Day Tag printable – Downloadable print available
  • Colored paper
  • Twine
  • Ribbon of choice
  • Glue – Elmer’s & Hot Glue
  • Scissors
  • Printer

Printables

If you wish to use the printables I created, you can download them below.

The size you print the PDF will depend on the size of the item you choose for your vase and the size you want your flowers. For the little collagen bottles I printed the templates as a 4×6 size image and the flowers and tags were just the right size.

Simply print the tag printable below and cut out the little tags. Then set them aside.

For the flower template, I just printed them on regular paper but if you have cardstock on hand it is nice to have templates on thicker paper so they don’t rip when tracing around them.

Same as the tags you will download below, print and cut around but you will be using this as a reverse stencil rather than the finished product.

The Paper Flowers

I have seen people make incredible intricate paper flowers but I wanted something simple and quick. If you are artsy and want to create your own flowers I would love to see what you end up doing. For those not so artsy I did put together a template to cut out and trace which you can download above.

Once you have your template printed or if you choose drawn up, cut out the flower shape and use it to trace around on your colored paper. You can also cut it out at the same time as your colored paper which is what I did for the first few.

Once you get all of your flowers cut out you will glue them together. For each flower you will need one of each size of the flower templates cut. Start with the largest cutout and glue the middle on top of that, the smallest on top of that, and finally the middle circle shape.

After they dried, I did fold up the petals a little to give them a more 3D look.

The VASE

I knew I was keeping a few of these little bottles for something. They are just so darn cute that I had to keep some around. If you want some of your own and are in the market for a great collagen supplement you can get them here. Not looking for a collagen supplement? Small shot energy drink bottles come to mind as a similar size. For an even smaller option, these you can get from the Dollar Tree.

The labels on the bottles I chose were applied to stand the test of time so covering them was the solution. I chose wider burlap ribbon for the middle and smaller decorative ribbons or twine for the top and bottom edge. Using my trusty hot glue gun, I glued the top and bottom ribbons first and then the wider piece in the middle next.

Adding the Paper Flowers & Tag

I simply glued the flowers on top of the ribbon and then glued in the tag.

The Hanger

For the hanger I used twine. All were hung a little differently. Some my husband did a fancy knot on, some I knotted and then wrapped to cover the knot, others I glued around the top.

These would bring a smile to my face on May Day!!

Your turn to create
