Mini Love Note Holder

I made this Mini Love Note Holder for $2 using items from the Dollar Tree!

I have been doing a ‘what I love about you’ heart a day for my kids and my husband this year as well as a family unit heart a day using the Love Note Countdown to Valentine’s Day Heart Frame I created out of branches from my yard. Doing the heart a day for my hubby this month and placing it by the coffee maker reminded me of a time years ago when we used to leave each other notes more regularly. So later when I was at the Dollar Tree and spotted the LAST small wooden heart I knew immediately that it would make a perfect note holder for hanging from the Keurig pod drawer.

Around the same time I had set out to create some easy inexpensive Valentine’s decorations using only Dollar Tree items.  My goal was to use already accumulated supplies and keep my out of pocket to less than $10 for three decorations.  I decided this project would be one of them. I did it for $6, got to eat chocolates, and added the Mini Love Note Holder I’ll show you how to make here, the Valentine’s Farm Truck Mini Crate (see this tutorial for why I HAD to eat chocolate to complete my decoration), and the Valentine’s Stop in the Name of Love’ Sign all to my Valentine’s decorations.

This Mini Love Note Holder was my favorite of the three to make and I think it might hang out all year round!

Let’s Create!

Supplies to Make your Mini Love Note Holder

  • Wooden heart from the Dollar Tree
  • Mini clothspins from the Dollar Tree
  • White paint watered down with water
  • Red paint or paint marker
  • Paint brush
  • Glue
  • Twine, string, or ribbon
  • Stencil, transfer, or printer and pencil

Making your Valentine Decor

  • Mix your white paint and water to create a whitewash solution. I used about a 50/50 mix. Paint the heart white. I knew I intended to do red at the very bottom side so I didn’t paint that with this solution.

  • While the heart is drying, I painted the clothspin red. Two coats.

  • Then I painted the bottom portion of the heart red. Once that dried, I touched up the areas that I went out of the lines 😉
See my out of the line painting!

  • Next, I knotted and glued on a piece of twine to hang it. Honestly this might have been best to do last as it made the surface a little uneven for painting the letters but I had my hot glue gun out for another project so I got it done.

Applying the Lettering

Next you can apply your lettering. If you have a Cricut, Stencil or Transfer you would like to use go ahead. I had a specific script in mind and so I used Canva font and typed out the ‘Love Notes’ script.

Items needed for the technique I used

Steps to get a printable design on wood

  1. Print the words in the desired size.
  1. Take a pencil and using the side of it’s tip shade over the backside of your printed script. I cut my two words apart as I didn’t want them placed the way they printed.
‘Love’ ready for application.
  1. Once you have finished applying the pencil, tape it down (pencil side towards the wood) and trace over it with a pen.

  1. Remove the paper to reveal your paintable script.
Pretty cool huh?
Ready to paint
  1. Paint over the script. I had a red paint marker on hand so ended up using this to speed the process a long a little. I did 3 coats.

  • Next, I glued the clothspin to the hanger. I used super glue for this because hopefully it will get lots of use.
Almost done

Finally, I painted a little red heart at the bottom. Mostly because there was a hole in the wood and it was driving me crazy.

DONE!! I just love the way it turned out!
