I made this Valentine’s ‘Stop in the Name of Love’ Sign for $2 using items from the Dollar Tree!
When I saw the mirror candle holder at the Dollar Store I immediately thought of a stop sign and since I had just added the Girl Boss sign (which was the ONLY large wooden hearts I could find) to my cart my brain sang, “Stop in the Name of Love.” I knew exactly what I needed to make.
I had set out to create some easy inexpensive Valentine’s decorations using only Dollar Tree items and knew this made the cut. My goal was to use already accumulated supplies and keep my out of pocket to less than $10 for three decorations. I did it for $6, got to eat chocolates, and added the Valentine’s ‘Stop in the Name of Love’ Sign I’ll show you how to make here, the Valentine’s Farm Truck Mini Crate (see this tutorial for why I HAD to eat chocolate to complete my decoration), and the Mini Love Note Holder all to my Valentine’s decorations.
This Valentine’s ‘Stop in the Name of Love’ Sign was fun, easy, and simple to make. Warning though you will be singing the song the ENTIRE time you are crafting it! Possibly everytime you see it hung too.
Let’s Create!
Supplies to make a Valentine’s ‘Stop in the Name of Love’ Sign
- A Heart shaped wooden sign from the Dollar Tree (this was the only one left I could find)
- Mirror candle holder from the Dollar Tree
- Stencils, transfers, or a Cricut (I am dreaming of one……) you could also free hand if you are good with letters
- Twine, string, or ribbon to hang it or you can just use the one that came with the heart
- White paint watered down with water
- Red paint, paint marker, or permanent marker
- Paint brush
- Hot glue or other strong glue
Making your Valentine’s ‘Stop in the Name of Love’ Sign
The Heart
- Remove the twine from the heart and set it aside. I was going to reuse it but ended up doing something different for this sign. I did use it for the Mini Love Note Holder though. Peel the sticker from the back as this is the surface you will be working with.
- Mix your white paint and water to create a whitewash solution. I used about a 50/50 mix for this project but ended up painting two coats as I wanted it to be a little more white. Paint the heart. I used a small foam brush as I like the way it applies the watered down paint. Remember you are not painting over the “Girl Boss” side but on the backside.
If desired, paint a second coat.
The Mirror
- While the heart was drying I worked on the mirror. The first thing I did was paint the edges of the mirror with some red paint. It gave it just enough red reflection but without being to much. In hindsight, a red Sharpie may have been easier.
- Next I applied my lettering, ‘in the name of’. I had the transfers pictured with the supplies in my scrapbooking stuff. These turned out to be a challenge and are not perfect but for the time involved to get them applied they were staying. I so want a Cricut! If you want to order me one I have been eyeballing them for awhile. I would love to hear suggestions if you have one for when I do make the investment. Ok, I digressed. Back to our sign. Next, I grabbed my stencils for the ‘Stop’ and ‘Love’ I grabbed a red Sharpie to use to outline the word with the intention of using red paint over that. I liked the way the red Sharpie looked so much that I just colored in the words. It is a little transparent and I like it on the mirror better than I think I would have liked paint. I suppose glass paint might give the same effect.
Back to the Heart
- Once the heart is dry, add your hanger. The plan was to get Valentine’s ribbon but I forgot when I was at the Dollar Tree. In my crafting/beading stash I had some red string on hand and thought it might look cool intertwined with the twine. I taped one piece of twine and two of the strings to the counter and braided them together. Once it was braided, I put it through the holes and made a large knot on each side to make sure it held the weight of the mirror.
Final Touches
- Finally, I peeled the protective foam feet off the back and glued the mirror to the heart. I ended up using hot glue and I think it will hold well. I was intending to use something stronger like E6000 but didn’t make it to the store for it.
- AND DONE! How easy was that?
